The original Citycard concept was first introduced to the City of Edinburgh Council’s Corporate Services in 1999. It targeted the city’s key workers in hospitals, schools and the Council, giving them access to discounts from local businesses. The idea was to help them make their wages go further and allow these essential workers enjoy themselves by relieving them of financial constraints when going out.

The concept was found to be a very popular and gradually Citycard was made available to the general public rather than a limited section of the community.

Every city resident was sent a Citycard free every summer, with a booklet telling  them where it could be used.

The Citycard had proved popular after being launched seven years ago as an “Edinburgh loyalty card”.

Other City Council’s in the UK introduce their own Citycard.

Nottingham City Council launch Citycard in 2004.

Westminster City Council launch Citycard in 2006.

Medway Council Launch Citycard.

Due to budget cuts the Edinburgh Council withdrew the Citycard in 2007.
