about us
The Founder of the Citycard, a local resident of Edinburgh, first started the concept of offering discounts from local businesses to the public sector including key workers in hospitals and schools. The idea was put to Edinburgh Council's Corporate Services back in 1999 to help the public sector workers make their wages go further and allow the essential workers enjoy themselves by relieving them of financial constraints when going out. At the same time this would help improve community relationships as well as increase competition between the suppliers of the goods and services. Although the Founder had approached the Council to get support and some funding none was given. The Founder paid for advertisements in the Councils Newsletters which they issued on a few occasions as the Council then refused to have any further meetings with the Founder or release any more of his advertisements.
In 2000 the Founder moved to London and continued to promote his idea to local London Boroughs which offered their approval but no financial support.
In 2007 that the Founder discovered that Edinburgh had in fact taken the original idea and branded as their own idea then launched to the public sector workers in 2000 where the concept was very popular and then the benefits were made available to the general public as well as other Boroughs.
The Founder took legal action against Edinburgh Council soon after the Council together with Westminster Council withdrew their Citycard in 2007.
The Founder although has continued to promote his idea now wants to expand the concept to the whole nation and beyond so that everyone can benefit and start to make regular savings.
In order to help sustain the community spirit, Citycard.co.uk will be giving 75% of net proceeds to charities.
Citycard.co.uk aims to be eco-friendly, cost effective by cutting down on junk mail and will constantly look for alternative methods to promote the products and services being offered. The Founder has since 2007 been proud to introduce the Citycard mobile phone wallpaper which makes the need to carry physical plastic cards disappear which is used as proof of membership and a genuine way of cutting the eco-footprint of our printing and distribution costs.
